FAQ: Single Point Piercings (AKA Dermals/Microdermals)
Also known as dermals or microdermals, single point piercings involve anchoring jewelry beneath the skin using just one entry point—unlike traditional piercings, which have both an entry and exit. A small anchor is inserted into the dermis (the middle layer of skin), with a post that sits slightly above the surface to hold decorative tops.
Single point piercings allow for creative placements and are perfect for those wanting something a little different. However, due to their unique nature—and the fact that they don't pass entirely through the tissue—they can be temperamental. They’re often referred to as “long-term temporary” piercings, since their longevity varies from person to person depending on anatomy, lifestyle, and placement. Some may keep their piercing for several years, while others may find it lasts only a few months.
How are they put in? Does it hurt?
We use a needle to create a small pocket in the skin, and then the anchor is carefully inserted. Most of our clients describe the sensation as quick and sharp, and similar or sometimes less painful compared to other piercings. The piercing itself is swift and the entire procedure (including jewelry insertion) is most often complete in less than a minute.
How long does it take to heal?
Healing generally takes 3-4 months, though some may take longer depending on placement and care.
What aftercare is needed?
Clean gently with sterile saline spray.
Avoid touching, twisting, or trying to remove the jewelry.
Keep hair, clothing, and makeup away from the area while it heals.
Will my body reject it, and how long will it last?
Single point piercings are sometimes called “long-term temporary” because their longevity varies. Some people keep them for years, while others find their body naturally pushes them out after only a few months.
Because the jewelry sits close to the surface of the skin, there’s always a risk of migration or rejection. Factors like anatomy, placement, lifestyle, and aftercare all play a role. Choosing high-quality jewelry, following your aftercare, and being mindful of snags can help your piercing last longer — but it’s important to know they’re not meant to be permanent.
Can I change the top myself?
We suggest coming back to the studio for jewelry changes. Trying to do it yourself may irritate the piercing or cause damage to the jewelry.
Can I still swim, work out, or wear makeup?
Avoid swimming during initial healing.
Be mindful of clothing or straps that might snag.
Skip makeup, lotions, or sunscreen directly on the piercing until it’s healed.
Can I remove it temporarily for a medical procedure?
The decorative top can be removed temporarily, but the anchor base (or foot) remains under the skin. The base is made of implant-grade titanium, which is considered MRI-safe.
That said, policies vary:
Some medical professionals allow the piercing to stay in place if documentation verifies the material. (We can provide a metal certification upon request.)
Others may ask for removal if the piercing interferes with imaging or out of an abundance of caution.
If removal is required, it should always be done by a professional piercer.
Can I put one anywhere?
Not quite. While dermals offer lots of creative placement options, some areas just don’t heal well. Piercings placed on high-friction spots like hands and fingers almost always reject quickly. We also take your lifestyle into consideration:
Upper cheek: not a good idea if you wear goggles for skiing or snowboarding.
Wrist: tricky if you wear watches or multiple bracelets.
Neck/chest: necklaces and seatbelts can cause problems.
We’ll help you choose a placement that balances your vision with what’s realistic for your body and daily life.
What if I don’t want it anymore?
A professional piercer can remove the anchor safely and usually without a lot of discomfort. Like most piercings, removal may leave a small scar.
